Do you have things you want to accomplish, but aren’t sure where to start? Or maybe you’ve set a goal for yourself, but haven’t been consistent with the actions to get you to where you want to be?
Here are three simple steps to setting and achieving goals:
Be crystal clear with what you want to achieve. Think big and don’t limit yourself. Pick one goal to focus on at a time.
Brainstorm the reasons why you want to achieve that goal. You need to love your whys- they will motivate you when you’re brain comes up with barriers (which it will, because the human brain seeks joy, avoid pain and defaults to the easy/familiar path).
Make a specific plan for achieving that goal. What do you need to think to achieve that goal? What emotion will you feel when you think that thought (e.g., confident, determined, empowered, etc…)? What actions will you take to achieve that goal and create the results you want?
Don’t over complicate it. Follow these steps and take action.
Remember, as you take action toward your goals you do NOT need to be perfect.
Perhaps you’ve made a plan in the past and then given up when you didn’t follow it perfectly. Perhaps you’ve thrown in the towel when you’re not making progress fast enough. Maybe negative self-talk a common theme for you.
News flash friends: you don’t need to follow your plan perfectly. We often get stuck in the “all of nothing” mentality (a component of perfectionist tendencies). Kick the “all or nothing” mentality to the curb. It is not serving you. Keep moving forward- even when you face setbacks (and you can be sure you’ll face setbacks).
The truth of the matter is that consistency, not perfection, is key to forward progress. Stack the small steps for big gains!
